Join us at the Peerless Rockville|Glenview Mansion Speaker Series for this book talk on a key architect of the Underground Railroad. Andrew K. Diemer of Temple University will discuss his book on the remarkable and inspiring story of William Still, a little-known abolitionist who dedicated his life to managing a critical section of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia – the free city directly north of the Mason-Dixon Line – helping hundreds of people escape from slavery. Among William Still’s passengers was a young girl from Rockville, Ann Maria Weems, who escaped from a slave trader in 1855 with the help of Still’s network and visited Still in Philadelphia on her way to safety in Canada.
