250 years ago, Montgomery County came into existence on September 6, 1776, just two months after our nation declared its independence. Since then, Montgomery County has undergone tremendous change: once overwhelmingly rural and agricultural, then increasingly suburban, and now itself highly urbanized in numerous spots. Although a progressive and demographically diverse locality today, prior to the Civil War it had a strong southern orientation and slavery figured significantly in its history. This talk presents the county’s story through 25 “snapshots in time,” summarizing the major historical themes, events, developments over the past two and a half centuries.
