A REUNION AT HISTORIC MONTROSE SCHOOLHOUSE, 40 YEARS IN THE MAKING

In 1979, Peerless Rockville boldly purchased a dilapidated two-room schoolhouse that was in the path of a planned major highway. State officials leased the land for $1 a year, with the agreement that Peerless would move the building when the road was built. The nonprofit pieced together funds and volunteers to bring the school back to life, finding former students to share stories and tenants who helped with upkeep. Montrose School became one of the first Montgomery County historic sites and was also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

After years of negotiations, in September 2024 Peerless Rockville purchased the land, reuniting ownership and is eager to move to the next phase. Peerless assembled grants and loans from Montgomery County, Preservation Maryland, and the Maryland Historical Trust for system upgrades and preparation for a new tenant in this special building.
