It’s Archaeology Month! Learn about local excavations by Richard Montgomery High School students.
Join Peerless Rockville in celebrating Maryland Archaeology Month with retired RMHS teacher Bob Hines, avocational archaeologist, and a presentation on excavations by Richard Montgomery High School students and others at the site of the home of one of Montgomery County’s most influential families. The Riggs family were farmers and merchants, and later founded the Riggs National Bank. The family home in Brookeville stood from 1768 until the 1960s when it was demolished to make way for a housing development. Mr. Hines led a group of adult and student volunteers to explore and excavate the site. In four seasons of work from 2015 – 2019, they have unearthed portions of the main house, slave quarters and outbuildings, expanding the story of the Riggs family and almost two centuries of history at the site.
