Long before the era of “fake news”, the freedom of the press often had to be defended with pens and pistols.

About this Event

Join Peerless Rockville and Mobtown Massacre author Josh S. Cutler for this illustrated lecture on Rockville resident Alexander Hanson, who remains a little known but important figure in American history two hundred years after his death. Mobtown Massacre tells the story of Alexander Hanson, a 19th century Federalist newspaper editor whose anti-war writings provoked a bloodthirsty mob, a midnight jailbreak and a brutal massacre in the city of Baltimore that stunned the nation. Hanson’s crusade to defend the free press and his fierce anti-war stances rankled many. He was later elected to the U.S. Congress and became of the youngest U.S. Senators in history, but never fully recovered from the attacks.
