Helen Hillstrom

Peerless Rockville is saddened by the passing of Helen Hillstrom, long-time Peerless volunteer whose actions and support enriched our community’s appreciation of Rockville’s history and architecture.

Helen passed away on October 29, at the age of 90.

Friends and family will be received at Pumphrey’s Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Avenue, in Rockville, on Thursday, November 7, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 520 Veirs Mill Road, in Rockville, on Friday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m.

Helen will be interred in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Helen and Will Hillstrom started Hillstrom Real Estate Co. in 1978, specializing in residential properties, so it was natural for them to appreciate the architecture around them. Helen also found time for the Board of Realtors, Chamber of Commerce, and Women Business Owners. Fortunately, particularly after Will’s death, she especially enjoyed Peerless Rockville. Helen was elected a member of the Board of Directors in the early 1980s, served as president 1990-92, and stayed on the Board until 1994. During her time, she helped steer the second phase of Montrose Schoolhouse restoration, plan the Red Brick Courthouse Centennial Year celebration (1991) and raise funds to restore the Grand Courtroom, rescue Wire Hardware Store, start Peerless’ Preservation Fund, and obtain protective historic designation for the 1891 and 1931 Courthouses, Art Deco Bank, and 1939 Post Office.

While serious about historic preservation, Helen always reminded us that she loved a good party. Thus her Peerless schedule was always full, with Progressive Dinners, New Year’s Day Brunches, annual calendars, awards, and more.
Helen also was an avid bridge player, traveler, friend, and neighbor.

Helen Hillstrom is survived by five children and seven grandchildren, numerous friends, and a grateful Peerless Rockville.
