Sugarloaf Mountain, a landmark visible from many parts of northern Montgomery and southern Frederick Counties in Maryland, is featured on the Post Office Murals Forever stamp, issued on April 10, 2019.
The Second Day Ceremony will be held at the former Post Office, current Police Station, 2 W. Montgomery Avenue, the location of the mural “Sugarloaf Mountain,” by Judson Smith.
The Second Day unveiling will feature postal officials and local government. After the ceremony, we invite you to the Red Brick Courthouse for a reception and the opportunity to purchase the Post Office Murals stamps. The stamps feature five government-commissioned artworks from the 1930’s and 1940’s featured in Post Office lobbies. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration commissioned artwork in Post Offices across the nation to provide jobs to artists and illustrate the history and culture of local communities across America. This pane of 10 stamps features five different murals, including Sugar Loaf Mountain.
Following the reception, Jennifer Fusselle, Regional Fine Arts Officer for the U.S. General Services Administration’s National Capital Region, will present on New Deal Art and the Sugar Loaf Mountain Mural.
