In 1983, Peerless Rockville took
title to the Baptist Cemetery on West Jefferson Street. Our
organization agreed to become caretakers of the tiny, ancient
burial ground in order to preserve it and to interpret the
cemetery in the context of Rockville history. Our
preservation work at the cemetery is ongoing. |
Tree Pruning Completed
This past year,
Peerless Rockville engaged Guardian /Bartlett Tree Experts to work
on trees in the historic
graveyard
owned by Peerless since 1983. The company pruned the majestic White
Oaks, an American Elm, an Ash, and a Locust. Sadly, the huge
American Red Maple was "rotten to the core" and had to be
taken down.
Guardian/Bartlett
Tree Experts donated a replacement Red Maple, a
boost to Peerless' long-term preservation strategy. The tree company
took care not to harm the ancient gravestones as the men worked
throughout the cemetery. |

New Fence Dedicated
Peerless Rockville's
latest improvements focus on the fence around the cemetery.
Re-created with help from an 1890 photograph and the Town & Country
Woman's Club, the former wood fence, erected in 1988, was
deteriorated and had to be replaced.
The new fence matches the fence around the Bouic family plot at the Historic Baptist Cemetery,
shown in the photo at left. The new fence was dedicated
Sunday, October 17. Many thanks to all who helped Peerless Rockville
reach this important goal.
Stop by to see the new
fence and the difference it makes. Call
Peerless Rockville at 301-762-0096 if you would like a free guide to
the cemetery and those interred there, if you wish to make a
donation to help underwrite the new fence, or would like to help to preserve this historic Rockville
place.
