historian Judy Christensen for the story of Father Divine
(George Baker), the influential and charismatic religious
leader who was born in a Rockville shanty in 1879. His
social programs helped thousands, but he was a controversial
figure who claimed to be God, required celibacy of his
followers, and advocated racial equality.
